runway look: “echoes of tranquility”

design process

This design explores the intersection between the structure of military gear and the fluidity of traditional hanbok. The top channels the functional spirit of a Korean War poncho, constructed from a sturdy grey duck canvas, which lends itself to produce a utilitarian silhouette. In contrast, the black linen trousers pay homage to the hanbok with its silhouette. The loose, relaxed fit enhances movement and comfort. The fusion of tough, durable materials with the grace of the traditional Korean hanbok reflects a harmonious blend of strength and elegance.

As a Korean menswear designer, my research into wartime apparel and historical clothing revealed how both served to protect, but in distinctly different ways—one through ruggedness, the other through freedom of movement. This look embodies that duality, with each piece balancing the echoes of tranquility.

Once I finalized the design for this look, I began by drafting patterns and creating a muslin prototype. This initial step allowed me to assess the fit in order to make adjustments for the final construction. I focused on refining the details, such as seam placements and proportions, to maintain the intended balance between ruggedness and elegance. Additionally, I worked closely with and directed a model to showcase the look on the runway. This collaboration was essential in bringing the vision to life, as it demonstrated the harmony between the two influences in motion.

I debuted as a menswear fashion designer for the Cornell Fashion Collective during their annual spring show in 2023. This opportunity allowed me to showcase my unique vision and creativity on a prominent platform, where I presented my look to a sold-out crowd of 3,100 spectators.
